Adipotide is a targeting peptide fused to a pro-apoptotic sequence:
- Homing to fat vasculature — the targeting portion binds prohibitin and ANXA2 markers on the blood vessels that specifically supply white adipose tissue.
- Triggered vessel apoptosis — the attached pro-apoptotic peptide then induces programmed death of those vessels, cutting off the fat's blood supply.
- Fat-cell resorption — deprived of supply, fat cells shrink and are resorbed, producing weight loss independent of appetite signaling.
- Known toxicity limit — primate studies showed rapid fat loss but also dose-dependent kidney effects, which halted human development. This is a research compound, not a therapeutic.
